ERA Board Meeting Sets Course for 2026 Reforms
Brussels, 18 November 2025, the European Rabbit Association’s Board convened to review strategic priorities for the European rabbit sector, focusing on upcoming EU legislative reforms and competitiveness. The meeting confirmed the members’ commitment to presenting a unified voice to policymakers as the EU political scene is more active than ever on livestock related issues.
Engagement with EU Institutions
Discussions highlighted the sector’s role in contributing expertise to EU institutions and reaffirmed the need for evidence‑based approaches. Convinced that there is not one solution but a plurality of solutions, ERA advocates a general approach which will avoid locking the sector in one single model.
Any legislative change regarding the handling of animals must involve a real improvement in their welfare based on scientific data, while preserving the significant efforts already made on de-medication, being economically viable for producers and maintaining good working ergonomics.
Data and Sector Insights
Members stressed the importance of new and robust scientific data focused on rabbits’ specificities and tested under farm/field conditions to guide future decisions, in particular on transport and housing systems.
Furthermore, efforts will intensify to collect and share updated information on production, consumption, and employment, reinforcing transparency and making sure the importance of the rabbit sector is well understood in Brussels.
Looking Ahead
ERA will continue to coordinate closely with institutions and expand advocacy efforts, ensuring the sector remains competitive and sustainable.
