The voice of the European Rabbit sector

What is ERA?

Created in 2022, the European Rabbit Association brings together national associations and federations of professionals from Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands, which are the main rabbit meat producing countries of the European Union. ERA represents the whole production chain (production, processing and marketing of rabbit meat).

Objectives of the association  

  • To promote and represent the interests of the rabbit sector in Europe

  • To improve the visibility of the sector among EU institutions and stakeholders by contributing to the debate around EU relevant policies

  • To promote values and quality standards of rabbit meat and encourage the development of the sector in Europe

  • To support the continuous sustainable transition of the sector through research synergies and exchange of best practices

In December 2023, the European Commission published a legislative proposal on the protection of animals during transport. In this context, the Commission opened a public consultation, the results of which will be summarized and presented to the Parliament and the Council to feed into the legislative debate. In this regard, the European Rabbit Association (ERA) shared its preliminary remarks on the proposal.

On the 30th of November 2023, the Board meeting of the European Rabbit Association (ERA) took place in Brussels in a nice and constructive atmosphere. Members shared the latest national initiatives and good practices, discussed the main challenges of the sector and possible solutions as well as strategic actions to be undertaken in 2024.

Over the last three years, the Spanish inter professional rabbit organization (INTERCUN), in collaboration with the Portuguese Association of Rabbit Farmers (ASPOC), successfully executed the European promotion campaign for rabbit meat, titled “The Secret is Rabbit Meat”.
