ERA General Assembly brings together European rabbit sector in Ghent

On 20–21 May 2026, the European Rabbit Association (ERA) held its General Assembly in Ghent, Belgium, bringing together representatives from the 10 European countries, acting for all of the association’s national member organisations. The meeting provided an opportunity to review market developments, discuss upcoming EU policy initiatives and exchange views on the latest scientific findings relevant to rabbit production.

Preparing for future EU policy changes

Members examined ongoing EU legislative initiatives affecting livestock production, with particular attention to the revision of the legislation on the protection of animals during transport. Discussions focused on the potential implications for the rabbit sector and the need for future regulatory frameworks to remain science-based, proportionate and adapted to the specific characteristics of rabbits, while remaining practical for producers and operators across Europe.

Science supporting better animal welfare

Participants reviewed the latest scientific evidence on rabbit welfare during transport. The discussions provided valuable insights into recent research findings and reinforced the sector’s commitment to continuously improving welfare standards based on robust scientific data.

Insights from the field

The programme also included a visit to a slaughterhouse and processing facility, offering participants first-hand insight into operational practices across the value chain. The visit highlighted the sector’s ongoing efforts to maintain high standards of animal welfare, food safety and product quality, while providing an opportunity to discuss practical challenges faced by operators.

Strengthening cooperation across Europe

The General Assembly once again demonstrated the strong cooperation among ERA members and their shared commitment to a sustainable, competitive and responsible future for the European rabbit sector. As discussions on animal welfare and livestock policies continue at EU level, ERA remains committed to providing expertise and constructive input to policymakers.
